A combination square is a versatile tool used for various tasks in woodworking, metalworking, and other trades. It combines the functions of a ruler, square, depth gauge, and level.

Here's how to use it:

1. Measuring: The ruler blade is marked with measurements in inches and centimetres, allowing you to measure lengths and distances.

2. Squaring: The head of the square is designed to form a 90-degree angle with the blade. This is useful for marking or checking square corners.

3. Depth Gauge: The head can be moved along the blade and locked in place, acting as a depth gauge for measuring the depth of holes or recesses.

4. Levelling: The level vial in the head allows you to check if surfaces are level or plumb.

5. Marking: The head can be used as a guide for marking parallel lines or angles.

6. Adjusting the Head: Loosen the screw or locking mechanism on the head to adjust its position along the blade, then tighten it to secure the head in place.

7. Checking Accuracy: Before using the tool, it's important to check that the head is square with the blade. You can do this by placing the square against a known straight edge and observing if the blade aligns perfectly.

8. Safety: When using the combination square, be mindful of the sharp edges and avoid applying excessive force. Always wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and eye protection.
