It was manufactured in Japan between 1977 and 1982. The FM was the replacement for Nikkormat FT3, it introduced an entirely new compact, but rugged, copper-aluminum alloy chassis. The FM was a more economically priced alternative to Nikon's professional F-series cameras. The FM was a long-lived and reliable camera. Over the next twenty-nine years Nikon would use the same chassis design for many of their popular cameras.

Key features of the FM:
•Lens: Interchangeable, Nikon F-Mount
•Shutter: Copal Square Focal Plane Shutter (Metal, Vertical Travel), 1″ – 1/1000″ + Bulb
