It was manufactured in Japan from 1982 to 2001. The original FM2 used an advanced Nikon-design, vertical-travel purely mechanical focal plane shutter with a range of 1 to 1/4000th second plus Bulb, plus a fast flash X-sync of 1/250th second. The FM2 was a more economically priced alternative to Nikon's professional F-series cameras.

Key features of the FM2:
•Lens: Interchangeable, Nikon F-Mount
•Shutter: Copal Square Focal Plane Shutter (Metal, Vertical Travel), 1″ – 1/4000″ + Bulb
•Meter: Centre-Weighted TTL metering
•ISO 12~3200
•Completely manual camera
